Cuban military figure. In July 1957, as a physician in Havana, he joined the rebel army againt the Batista regime. As a member of the Second Column headed by Camilo Cienfuegos, he fought bravely in many battles and won the ranks of captain in 1958 and major in 1959. After the triumph of the Revolution, he held many positions within the Revolutionary Army Forces. In 1961, during the Bay of Pigs failed invasion and in 1962, during the October Missiles Crisis, he was chief of staff of the Army. A founding member of the Cuban Communist Party, he served on its Central Committee and its Politburo. He was elected in the People's National Assembly and was a member of the State Council. In his administrative carreer he served first as Minister of Interior from January 1968 to March 1979, and then as Minister of Public Health up to January 1986. In 1976, he was promoted to the rank of general of division. In April 2001, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Republic of Cuba. He was in his seventies when he died in Havana.
