One of the original members of The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Baptized by Joseph Smith Jr., he led a faithful life until he became disaffected over financial conditions and was subsequently excommunicated from the Church.
He never rejoined the Church but visited Salt Lake City once telling former associate and then Apostle Erastus Snow, "Stick to it, for it is good."
He later became interested in the Church's geneology interests and recovered thousands of names which he submitted to the Church and the ordinances were performed immediately. Citizens of Logan reported for three days the Logan Temple to be on fire and constant singing from inside, but as it turns out it was just spriritual fire and heavenly choirs.
John died of congested lungs with angina [pectoris].
