Identified on his gravestone by only a single name, Cato was a slave who served the family of Daniel Phoenix. Buried just outside the wrought iron fence containing the Phoenix family plots, his barely legible marble marker bears the inscription:
"He was for nearly 40 years a faithful servant..."
