Memorial service for Joe Maurice Westerfield, 95, of Killeen will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Clements Chapel at the First Baptist Church in Killeen .

He died Nov. 4, 2007, in a local hospital.

Joe was born April 2, 1912, in McGregor.

He coached and taught in Texas public schools for many years. Joe graduated from McGregor High School in 1929, then attended Baylor University, Kansas Junior College (on a football scholarship) and Howard Payne University from which he received a bachelor's degree in 1936. In 1948, he received a master's degree from the University of Houston. During the 1940s, Joe coached football and other sports at high schools and junior highs in Gatesville, Moody, Meridian and Liberty. He met his wife, Ann Irene Rushing, in 1942 while coaching in Meridian. From 1942 to 1944, he served with the 268th Army/Air Force in Italy.

Afterwards, he coached in Liberty until 1961, when he and his family moved to Killeen, where he taught Texas history at Nolan Middle School until his retirement in 1974. Joe loved all sports and after his retirement, played tennis into his 80s and golf into his 90s. Joe very much enjoyed people and will be greatly missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Irene Westerfield, of Killeen; his sons, Gregory Westerfield and daughter-in-law, Jane of Lampasas, Jon Westerfield, of Killeen, Paul Westerfield and daughter-in-law, Kathy of Killeen; and by three grandchildren: Jonathan Westerfield, Shelley Westerfield, and Joey Westerfield.
