Mary V. Beck was the first woman elected to the Detroit City Council, serving in that capacity for twenty years, beginning in 1949. City leaders staged a special inauguration for her installation because many people wanted to witness history. She had previously worked as a Juvenile Court investigator and social worker. She ran for re-election six times, winning the position of council president in 1957.
She was known as a liberal. She backed putting fluoride into Detroit's water system to strengthen teeth and wanted expiration dates on milk containers. She voted against travel for city employees, considering it wasteful. In 1969, Mary ran for mayor, coming in third behind winner Roman Gribbs and Richard Austin, who would later become Michigan's Secretary of State.
