Atlanta's first African American Photographer. Mr. Askew began his photography career in the 1880s at Motes Studio downtown Atlanta. He later operated his own studio from home on Summit Avenue. Mr. Askew was instrumental in photographing numerous African-American subjects for W.E.B. Du Bois' 1900 Paris Exposition (Negro Exhibit, Lot 11930, in the Library of Congress). The picture, at right, is a self-portrait. Mr. Askew was married (1868) to Mary E. Askew. To their union were born Minnie N., Arthur C., Clarence E.J., Walter F., Norman M., Everett E. and Nellie E. Askew. Minnie N. Askew-Davis had a daughter, Georgia H. Davis as recorded in the Atlanta Ward 4, Fulton County 1900 and 1910 U.S. Federal Census.
Note: Three years after his death, the Great Fire of 1917 destroyed all of his photographic equipment and negatives.
