Former Apostolic Nuncio in Syria and Archbishop of the Titular See of Treba, Monsignor Luigi Accogli was born in Andrano, Lecce, Italy, to Salvatore Accogli and Carmela Cazzato, and entered the Archdiocesan Seminary of Otranto in 1929. Ordained to the priesthood on March 6, 1943, he pursued his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
Sent to the Apostolic Nunciature in Lima, Peru, in 1949, serving first under Monsignor Giovanni Panico and successively under Monsignor Francesco Lardone, in 1954, he moved to Bogotá, Colombia, as First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature. Chargé d'Affaires of the Internunciature of Egypt during the sickness of Archbishop Georges Ghislain de Jonghe d'Ardoye MEP., between 1956 and 1957, for the next ten years he was assigned to the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.
At 50 years of age, Pope Paul VI appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in China, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular Archbishopric See of Treba on November 26, 1967, from Cardinal Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, assisted by Archbishops Sergio Pignedoli and Gaetano Pollio PIME.
Appointed Nuncio in Ecuador on September 29, 1970, and successively in Bangladesh on July 6, 1979 and Syria on June 17, 1988, Monsignor Accogli retired on February 18, 1993. He passed away following a lengthy illness on June 21, 2004, aged 86, and lies buried in his native Andrano.
