"A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at 1 Medford Leas Way, Medford Township, for Katharine J. "Kackie" Anders of Medford Township, formerly of Madison, who died Saturday, March 10, 2007, with her family at her bedside. She was 84. Born in Elizabeth, she lived in Madison for more than 30 years before moving to Medford Leas, where she lived for 19 years. From 1972 to 1975, she was director of Volunteer Services at the Morris County Welfare Board. From 1977 to 1987, she served as the executive director of the Southeast Morris Chapter of the American Red Cross in Madison, now the Colonial Crossroads Chapter. After her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Anders continued to volunteer on the Board of the Grace Counseling Center and with the Voluntary Action Center, both in Madison. Mrs. Anders was a 1939 graduate of the Vail-Dean School in Elizabeth, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Connecticut College in New London in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. She also took postgraduate courses at Columbia in New York and attended graduate school at Bryn Mawr (Pa.) College for pre medicine. Mrs. Anders spent many years volunteering for such organizations as the Elizabeth YWCA, the Junior Leagues of Elizabeth and Morristown, the United Fund, St. John's Church in Elizabeth, and Grace Episcopal Church of Madison. In Medford Leas, she became active in volunteer activities, including the Thrift Shop, and founded a monthly Communion Service associated with St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Her husband, Harley S. Anders, died previously. She is survived by a son, James H. Anders and his wife, Pam, and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Colorado Springs, Colo. In keeping with her spirit of volunteerism and community service, Mrs. Anders elected to have her body donated to students of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, for anatomical study, research, and the advancement of medical science. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Colonial Crossroads Chapter, 1 Madison Ave., Madison, N.J. 07940."
