As a child it is believed he was abandoned in a basket outside the Royal Exchange, London. When discovered, he was given the name Thomas Gresham after the founder of the Royal Exchange. In 1817 he founded the Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin. The Gresham remains one of the most famous hotels in the city.
