Walter William Acker, 85, formally from Waterville, NY, died peacefully at his daughter's home in San Antonio, TX surrounded by family on April 15. 2013. He was born the son of Frank M. and Angeline Acker in Utica, NY.

At the age of 12, he was hired out on the Fenton farm in West Winfield. He attended schools in Utica, Sauquoit, West Winfield and Waterville. A month before his 17th birthday, he joined the Navy Seabees for the duration of World War II. He traveled the Pacific Ocean in a convoy with General McArthur.

Walter was a member of the American Legion in Waterville and an avid bowler. He enjoyed playing cards and square dancing at Harmony Hall in Sangerfield and he also enjoyed many camping trips with his family and friends. His favorite sporting events were boxing and NASCAR.

In 1952 Walter married the love of his life, Doris M. Dempsey. He was employed with GLF / Agway for over 40 years. He started as a truck driver and then advanced to dispatch, sales and management. He was especially proud of his position as a plant manager on the Hudson River. After retirement, he managed the Agway Gas Station on Main St. in Waterville and owned his own sharpening business. In 1995, his wife and he retired to Ormond Beach, FL where he enjoyed dinner dances as a member of the Eagles and the Moose club as well volunteering at NASCAR races in Daytona. In 2010 due to failing health, his wife and he moved to San Antonio, TX with their daughter Susie and her husband.

In addition to his wife he is survived by five daughters: Janet (Chris) Golding of Corfu, Audrey (Walt) Hughes of Waterville, Susie (Russ) Moravec of San Antonio, Judy Acker (Ken Minckler) of Earlville, and Laurie Moon (Ryan Morgan) of Sherburne; 11 grandchildren: Dustie Miller, Sandra Lloyd, Tonya Sullivan, Sarah Otto, Valerie Diehl, Erin Hughes, Jillian Kervin, Joel Bugbee, Tamrin Bugbee, Jolene Mezza, and Calvin Minkler; 9 great grand children: Corey Miller, Blake Clark, Riley Diehl, James Sullivan, Tayler Diehl, Alyssa Hughes, Amoni Hughes, Chelsea Sullivan and Brody Warchocki; 2 sister-in-laws, Nancy Acker and Shirley Dempsey; several special nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special K-9 friend, Blue Boy. He is preceded in death by his brother Frank S.; his sister Ethel Sigl; and 2 half-sisters, Edith Wilder and Mildred Errgong.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8500 Cross Mountain Trail in Leon Springs, TX. Then a memorial service will be held in Waterville, NY on June 1, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernards Catholic Church.
