Betty was born on September 29, 1925, in Peoria, Illinois, the only child of LaRue and Ruth Deveraux Cash. Following the depression they settled in Houston. After High School, Betty worked as Secretary to the Manager of the Interstate Commerce Commission and went to the University of Houston night school.
On December 27, 1947, she married Richard Emmett Mellette at First Methodist Church. Moving to Clute, she was the Payroll Manager at Reynolds Electric, and became a member of the Eastern Star. The marriage ended amicably on December 20, 1970.
On June 4, 1971, she met Richard D. Able, and they married two months later in the United Methodist Church in Clute. She retired in 1974 from secretarial work, and her hobbies became gardening, painting, and free lance writing. Her favorite bible verse was Psalms 118:24, "This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it."
Betty was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxillary Post 3473 in Cottage Grove, Oregon, a member of the First Baptist Church of Rotan, on the board of the Fisher County Senior Center, and the secretary of the Anne Shelburne DAR Chapter of Rotan.
Mr. Able died on August 20, 1999 in Alvin, and she moved to Rotan to be near his family.
Betty is preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Jack Able; and cousins Dorothy Gibson and Richard Kemp.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marian Able of Rotan; her niece, Bettie Hargrove of Rotan; her nephew, Don Wooten of Alvin; her great-nephews, David Hargrove and wife, Geneva, of Anson, Walter Hargrove and wife Deana of Buffalo Gap, and Neal Hargrove and wife, Donna, of Rotan; her great-niece, Martha Cox and husband, Dale, of Rotan; her step-son, Dan Able of Redlands, California; four grandchildren; and many beloved friends.
