THE PARIS NEWS, Monday, October 27, 1997, p.4B:

"Henderson - F. W. 'Fred' Willard Armstrong, 79, 1604 West Lake Drive, Henderson, formerly of Paris, died Friday, October 24, 1997, at Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, at Mother Zion Baptist Church with the Dr. Charles P. Hunt Sr., the Rev. Clara Gilbert, the Rev. Jerry Williams and the Rev. J. B. Dunlap officiating. Jenkins-Garmon Funeral Home will make burial in Restlawn Gardens Cemetery.

He was born January 1, 1918, in Honey Grove to Brayton and Mary Johnson Armstrong. He retired after 30 years as a soil conservationist for the Department of Agriculture in Henderson. He was a graduate of Gibbons High School in Paris and received a BS degree from Prairie View A&M University and an MA in administration from Texas Southern University in Houston.

He married Helen L. Gregory Feb. 17, 1967, in Paris.

He was active in Scouting for many years, member of the board of directors of East Texas Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He was recipient of the Award of Merit and Silver Beaver. He was past-president of the Henderson Sunrise Kiwanis Club, served as commissioner for the Yates Park Boys Baseball League, served on the board of directors of the United Way, vice chairman of the Community Action Program for Rusk, Cherokee and Smith Counties, member of Mu Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Inc. Fraternity, served as mayor pro term of Henderson and also a District 3 city councilman for two years. He served as treasurer of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club and was a deacon and trustee at the Mother Zion Baptist Church, chairman of its building fund committee, cubmaster of the church, and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Cheryl Gill of Longview and Mrs. Kevin (Linda) Johnson of Columbus, SC; two sons, Robert Armstrong of Houston and Adlee and wife Lenora Anderson of Houston; four sisters; a brother; a mother-in-law, Mattie Wortham of Paris; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, family members and friends."
