Abbey was residing in Worth County, Iowa, when he enlisted as a PVT in Co. M of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Dec. 30, 1863. He was wounded in action on March 31, 1865, at Six-Mile Creek, Alabama. He later mustered out with his company on Aug. 8, 1865, at Atlanta.

LDS records show the date of birth as 1844. But his enlistment record shows he was "25 when he enlisted in 1863." His first name is also shown as "Vilroy."

He married Mary Emily Boutell on Sept. 28, 1867.
