The Navy has released the name of a recruit who died Monday, a day after completing Recruit Training Command's Battlestations final training event.
"Recruit Andrew Adams, 20 years old, of Sarasota, Fla passed out and hit his head," said Lt. Matt Comer, spokesman for Naval Service Training Command at Great Lakes, Illinois on Wednesday. "His recruit division commander responded with first aid until medical personnel could arrive, but neither could not revive the recruit."
Comer said Adams was taken to Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center where he was officially pronounced dead at approximately 5:59 p.m., Central standard time.
Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating, Comer said, adding that the cause of death is still unknown.
Completion of the Battlestations event, a tough all-night evolution, is essentially the final exam recruits must pass before being given the title of "sailor" and are allowed to graduate.
"Recruit Andrew Adams was an outstanding Sailor," said Capt. Doug Pfeifle, commanding officer of Recruit Training Command. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. His loss is felt by all of his fellow recruits and the entire Recruit Training Command staff."
Adams arrived at RTC on Oct. 7 and was slated to train to be an avionics technician after his graduation from RTC, which had been scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5.
