***** My older brother, Raul Alvarado Jr., was and still is my inspiration in life. Over 30 years have passed since his death, and not a day goes by that I don't think about him. At an early age, he possessed, the leadership skills and abilities, that lead to him towards, becoming an officer. He cared deeply, about his family, therefore, I know that he cared, deeply, about the men, he was entrusted to lead, in combat, because he treated them, like his family. His letters reflected, that loyalty and the letters, we received from soldiers who, had served in his platoon, confirmed, our assumptions. Several of the soldiers whom he lead in combat have recently related to me how he cared for them, and that he was a good officer. He was a RANGER, an infantryman, a soldier who lived and slept on the ground next to those he lead. He died among his men, some of them died with him that day, doing what he thought was right. Today, he still serves, as a role model, for my children.
Forever Faithful, Gilbert Alvarado, LTC (Retired) United States Army, Airborne, Ranger, Infantryman, Helicopter Crew Chief/Door gunner - 101st Airborne Air Assault -Vietnam 1970-71
Younger Brother
Roswell, NM.
***** I want to share something else with you that occurred on my bird as we were going in. On our initial attempt to approach LZ Lolo, the enemy fire was so intense that we had to break off and circle while awaiting gunship support to help escort us in. I recall thinking that I had less than 40 days left in country and 3 March was not a good day because my older brother (1LT Raul Alvarado, Jr.) had been killed on 3 March 1969 while leading his platoon west of Chu Lai.

***** LT. Alvarado was my uncle's platoon leader in charlie company, 1st platoon. My uncle was on 'point' the day they walked into an ambush at the battle of chop vum. He died trying to save my uncle and another man. Lt. Alvarado and Sp4 Arlin Koehn paid the ultimate sacrafice so I might live in freedom! You will never be forgotten! In memory of all the charlie company brothers - C CO. 1ST BN., 52ND INF., 198TH LIB.

***** I was only 8 when Jr. died. I remember it like it was yesterday. I still get choked up when i think of him. I'll never forget shortly before he left for Vietnam, he drove up in a red convertible to my house one sunday and drove me, just me and him to 7-ll to get an Icee. Our families were so close and we loved Jr. so much. I prayed for him every night as a little girl and still to this day 39 yrs later remember him as i pray. I love you Jr.; know that you inspire me everyday. Thank you so much for teaching us true honor, service and integrity.
