Robert Nesen was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1942, received his Navy wings in 1943 and was on active duty until 1946. He retired as Lieutenant Commander after 22 years in the reserve.

Mr. Nesen was active in Republican politics throughout his life and was a longtime friend of both President Nixon and President Reagan. He worked in Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and was co-chairman of California's delegation to the 1980 Republican National Convention. President Nixon appointed him to serve as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and President Reagan appointed him to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Australia and Nauru from 1981 - 1985.

Robert Nesen received many awards. including being named the "Patriotic Citizen of the Year" when he received the Patrick Henry Patriotism Medallion. In 1994 he was awarded the "World Citizen Award" by Vice President Quayle.
