Actor. James E(dward) Murdoch was widely respected for his patriotism and scholarship as well as for his acting abilities. His career began in Philadelphia in 1829. When the Civil War broke out, he devoted himself wholly to the Union cause. Refusing to appear on stage during the course of the war, he gave public lectures and recited patriotic verse instead. Murdoch donated all of the proceeds from these events to various soldiers' causes. At the end of the war, it was estimated that he had raised more than 250,000 dollars. Also an educator and authority on elocution, he published four books in his lifetime. After his death, the area around his home in southern Ohio was named Murdoch in his honor.
