Polish politician; born at Zbaraz (Galicja, now Ukraine). 1892 Co-founder of the socialist party SDP; several times imprisoned by the Austrian authorities for his patriotism and social struggle. 1897 elected to the Austrian parliament (Reichsrat); 1918 head of the provisional (Lublin) government; member of Sejm; 1928-1930 marshal (speaker); 1926 supportive of Pilsudski's coup, later in opposition.
Apart from the 1926 events, a noble representative of Polish democracy and parliamentarism.
