Slavic missionary. Born at Thessaloniki, educated at Constantinople. Together with his brother Method he translated parts of the Bible into Old Church Slavonic. Developed the glagolitic alphabet. Traditionally, the invention of the cyrillic alphabet is also attributed to Cyril.
Religious missions to Khazars (crimea), Arabs and to Moravia.
Died at Rome. Canonized soon by the Eastern churches and in 1880 by the catholic church.
The grave site indicated here is in dispute. Similarily, it is not proven that Cyrill's brother Method (Saint Methodius, 826-885) is buried here, as legend holds.
Strangely, most Roman tourist guides do not mention the graves in San Clemente crypt, a site however of utmost importance especially for Slavic nations.
