Polish writer.Dabrowska was a member of the impoverished landed gentry. Interested both in literature and politics, she set herself up to help people born into poor circumstances. She studied sociology, philosophy, and natural sciences in Lausanne and Brussels and moved to Warsaw in 1917. She worked temporarily in the Polish Ministry for Agriculture, and began treading more and more into newspaper reporting and into public life. In 1927 she became more involved in writing against human rights violations in Poland. During the occupation of Poland she stayed in Warsaw and supported the cultural life of the Polish underground.In her novels, plays and newspaper articles she analyzed the mental consequences of the happenings of the world for everyday citizens. Her major novel, Noce i dnie (Nights and Days, 1932-1934)is an four-volume saga about a family living in the Polish countryside, and it chronicles the adventures of most of the books' characters during a 50-year period. Jerzy Antczak's film based on this book was nominated for Oscar in Best Foreign Film category.Other works:Essays about Conrad,Adventures of a Thinking Man,Ludzie Stamtad,Gwiazda Zaranna.
