Johann Heinrich Dege was a German immigrant. He and his wife arrived in the port of New Orleans, Louisiana, from Bremen, Germany, aboard the ship Diana on June 3, 1845. He was a mason for the remaining 13 years of his life in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was Heinrich Dege and mother was Wilhelmine Brunke Dege. He was the husband of Anna Dorothea Giesecke Dege and the father of Friedrich Wilhelm "Fred" Dege, Johann Heinrich "Henry" Dege, August Wilhelm Dege, Christian Dege, Louis Dege, and Charlotte Christiane Dege.

His will was recorded in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 29, 1858, with his wife, Anna Dorothea, as executrix. Although page 113 of the death registry states "Holy Ghost" as the cemetery, no record exists that his body was one of those exhumed and moved with all of the others.
