Jack Hansen, 78, of Watertown, formerly of Garden City, died Wednesday evening, March 22, 2006 in a Watertown Care Center following a long illness. Funeral services will be 2:30 pm Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the Garden City United Methodist Church. Rev. Warren Rhodes will be officiating. Burial with military rites by the Garden City American Legion will follow in the Garden City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 25 from 4-6pm at the Arne Funeral Home in Clark, and 1 hr. preceding the services at the church on Sunday.
Jack Ernest Hansen was born on the family farm in Thorpe Twp. of Clark County on August 23, 1927 to Ernest and Pearl (Darling) Hansen. As a young child, Jack moved with his family to Milbank and Watertown. Later the family returned to Bradley where Jack finished his education, graduating from Bradley High School in 1946. On October 5, 1946, Jack joined the US Marine Corp, where he served as an armored amphibian tractor crewman. He was discharged from the Marines on October 4, 1949. Upon his return, Jack began working for Everett A. Fletcher; the man that had the greatest influence on Jack's interest in farming.
Jack married Betty Peterson on May 29, 1949. To this union, four children were born, Wendy Crabtree, Jack D. Hansen, Holly Hansen and Douglas Hansen. Jack farmed in Clark County for many years, mainly raising potatoes, and wheat.
On January 28, 1974, Jack married Diane Zeck in Aberdeen, SD. He later adopted Diane's two daughters, Cheryl and Kris. Jack continued continued farming until he and Diane moved to Watertown in March of 1999. He later entered a Care Center in Watertown, where he was residing at the time of his death.
In addition to his love for farming, Jack enjoyed going to the Black Hills to hunt deer, something he enjoyed for 40 years. Jack was a member of the Garden City Am. Legion, and the South Dakota Potato Growers Association. He also served on the Selective Service Board, the Garden City Elevator Board, the Garden City School Board, and was on the Fairfield Foods Board of Directors. In 1959, Jack was awarded the SD Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
Jack will be sadly missed by his wife Diane of Watertown, SD; four daughters; Wendy Crabtree, Bradley, SD; Holly Hansen, Ft.
