Sergei was a large black American shorthair cat. He came to us as a kitten and immediately related more to humans than fellow felines. He was an only cat for six months before joined by Samson, who he tolerated. Sergei was a keen observer of his humans. He once observed a pile of red beans being sorted and had to pick one up in his paw to see what it was. He was stealthy enough to steal lunches from workmen and family. He loved being petted but was not too fond of being brushed. He was an inventive feline. Knowing the pantry where his food was kept, he managed to figure a way to open the door and knock the large plastic container to the floor. Childproof locks had to be used to secure his food in future. Sergei once ate an entire roll of string he had been playing with. which he fortunately passed without difficulty. He was never allowed to have anything like string after. He was also good at playing hide-and-seek. He would also play with small balls, usually at night, by himself, making cooing sounds. However, if he knew he was being watched, he stopped batting the ball.

He once was close enough to the pasta bowl to help him to a piece of spaghetti to get a hold of it and eat it. He liked to eat different vegetable such as broccoli, zucchini and green beans. He liked to eat fish only if it has been cooked. He liked milk and yogurt and lemon scones.

His kidney disease became suddenly worse in January 2004 and he eventually became bedridden and stopped eating.
