Karl Henry Albert Wend was the fourth child of Emil Louis and Wilhelmina Wend. He went to baking school intending to become a baker and had an arrangement with an uncle, Albert Schuntner, to open a bakery in St Louis, Missouri. In the meantime, Karl enlisted in the Navy, intending to be in for one year, on January 7, 1941. World War II intervened. Karl became a Navy deep-sea diver, serving on several ships and submarines. Unfortunately, Karl's uncle died before the war ended. He was still able to do his baking in the family business, and his pies and other confections were highly regarded. He was an avid gardener and a good friend to everyone.
