Elizabeth Ann Van Zandt Adams died on February 20, 2016 at her home in Greenville, South Carolina. Betsy was born on September 9, 1925, the daughter of J. Percy Van Zandt and Helen Benedict Van Zandt. She grew up on Broad View Farm in Blawenburg, New Jersey, where her family engaged in various agricultural endeavors, chiefly the operation of an International Harvester farm machinery and implement dealership. She attended high school at Northfield School for Girls, a boarding school in Northfield, Massachusetts, where she was the student body president her senior year. After beginning college at Douglass College (part of Rutgers University), she completed her studies at Cornell University's nursing program in New York City in 1948, with a bachelor's degree and certification as a registered nurse.

Betsy married Rayford K. Adams, Jr. in 1949 and was a devoted Marine Corps wife and mother until Scoop's retirement in 1964, when they moved to Concord, North Carolina and lived with their family until Scoop's death in 1981. She later moved to Greenville to be near her daughter. She was an active participant in causes and activities that were meaningful to her, including Red Cross blood drives, Meals on Wheels, and the work of her church families. Betsy never met a stranger, cared for her family with love and devotion, and enjoyed airplane food. She laughed easily at those silly moments in life that make it worth living.

Those who will miss Betsy's grace, humor, and always rosy outlook on life include her son, Rayford K. (Trip) Adams III, and his wife, Ann Adams; her daughter, Nancy A. Quinn, and her husband, Will Quinn; her AFS daughter, Liv Steimler, her husband, Mike Steimler, and their family; her grandchildren, Josh Adams (and his wife, Libby Grubbs), Jenny (Adams) Ledford (and her husband, Howie Ledford), Woody Quinn (and his wife, Laura DiStasi Quinn) and Liza Quinn; her great-grandchildren, Celia Adams, Drew Adams, and Lily Quinn; and her brother, John P. Van Zandt, Jr., and his wife, Martha Van Zandt. Her close-knit family also includes many nieces and nephews and their families. Through the years, Betsy had many wonderful friends who will feel the loss of her kindness and friendship.

A memorial service celebrating Betsy's life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina, at 3:00pm on Tuesday, February 23, 2016. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who knew and loved Betsy to consider memorial gifts to the Music Fund of Westminster Presbyterian Church (2310 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605).
