Donald T. Austin, Sr. CHARLOTTE - Mr. Austin, 85, of Charlotte, died peacefully Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House, Southminster. He was born May 21, 1930, in Charlotte, the third of nine children to the late Della Summers Austin and Willie T. Austin. He graduated from Tech High School and spent his career with the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 35 years. He also spent 10 years in the real estate industry with Ed Griffin Co. and 15 years with NCARC where he held guardianship for over 30 handicapped adults. Mr. Austin was an advocate for people with disabilities for over 50 years. He served on the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board from 1980 until 1988 and was a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge # 692 A.F. & A.M. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, daughter, Debbie, brothers, Robert, James and Richard and sisters, Dorothy and Nancy. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Mullis of Matthews, son, Troy Austin and daughter Becky Austin of the home, and son Doug Austin, of Indian Trail; brothers, Roy Austin (Angela) and Bill Austin (Gwen) and a sister Carol Austin; two granddaughters, Lauren Borchert and Lindsey Mullis and one great-grandson Jackson Borchert. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 25, 2016, from 7-9pm at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 Sharon Amity Rd. Graveside services will be held 2:00pm Friday, February 26, 2016, at Evergreen Cemetery, officiated by Reverend John Harrill.
