Charlotte native. He was a member of Shamrock Drive Baptist Church and a World War II Army air corps veteran.

Harrisburg; mother, Mrs. Della Austin of Harrisburg; brothers, Roy Austin of
Rock Hill, Robert Edward Austin of Morganton, Bill Austin of Irmo, S.C., Richard
Austin of Fort Mill, S.C., Don Austin ; sisters, Miss Carol Austin , Mrs. Nancy McLeod, both of Harrisburg; six grandchildren.
