HARRISBURG -- Mrs. Marcell Ludlam Austin , 71, died January 11, 2003 in Concord, NC. The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Monday at Providence Baptist Church, Harrisburg, NC, with The Rev. James McBride, Rev. Bill Saylor, Dr. Hugh Cooper and Rev. David Hicks officiating. Interment will be in Carolina Memorial Park. Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Monday at the church.
Born March 24, 1931 in Horry Co., SC, she was the daughter of the late James Nelson Ludlam and Emily Blanton Ludlam.
As an educator for 31 years she retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Mrs. Austin was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Harrisburg. She was a dedicated mother, pastor's wife, teacher, and friend to many. According to Mrs. Austin , the descriptor she coveted most was that of "Grammy" to her 4 grandsons. She enjoyed her time helping others especially in childrens mission ministries. She was a graduate of North Greenville Junior College and a graduate of Coker College. She also received a Masters degree in Religious Education from Carver School of Missions/Southern Seminary. Memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church Van Ministry, 5315 S. NC Highway 49 Harrisburg, NC which meant a great deal to Mrs. Austin .
Survivors are husband, Rev. Robert E Austin ; son, Edward Austin and wife Esther of Wake Forest, NC; daughter, Lisa Austin Schultz and husband, Steve of Orlando, FL; grandsons, Austin , Bobby, Logan and Brady; sisters, Eralake Baker, Helen Yangel and Dora Corbett.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Ludlam and A.R. Shelley, Jr.
