A native of Galve, Sweden Anderson had his sights set for a life at sea as a young boy. Later coming to the United States he worked his way up to the rank of captain on comercial merchant ships. Captain Anderson joined the Dollar Steamship Line (later the known as the American President Line after 1938) based in San Francisco, California in 1917 until he was forced to retire due to declining heath in October 1935. Captain Anderson had taken the s/s President Hayes on the second of the Dollar Steamship Line's legendary round-the-world voyages in February 1924 and was later given command of the giant new luxury liner s/s President Hoover when the ship entered service in August 1931 and commanded the ship until his retirement in October 1935 due to his declining health.
