Mary was a daughter of Thomas Blackwell of King William County, Virginia and his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Meredith. She married three times and had children by her first two husbands. She was first married to Drury Boswell Winfrey about 1796 and had a daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Boswell Winfrey. Her second child was Eliza Catlett, daughter by her second husband, Samuel Jones Catlett. Around 1810, Mary married a third time to Fleming Dugar. Following his death in 1820 she moved first to Hardeman and then to Fayette County, Tennessee with her daughter Peggy and son-in-law William Ruffin. Mary had become a fairly wealthy woman after being widowed three times. She left a will which spoke of her two Ruffin grandchildren: James Drury Ruffin and Mary Eliza Ruffin Tucker, wife of Adolphus Fenton Tucker. Her daughter, Peggy, had passed away prior to her death.
