Sarah Zalinda White was the daughter of John Henry White and Mildred Terrell Satterwhite. Born in Georgia, her father and mother moved to Panola County, Mississippi about 1836 where her father died in 1839. Sarah's husband, Dr. Greensville S. Dowell was ten years her senior. She was only 17 at the time they eloped. In 1853 they moved to Texas. They had three children: John Henry White Dowell, Shelton Clark Dowell, and Alice M. Dowell. Sarah Z. Dowell lived with her husband in Galveston, Texas following the Civil War, but their marriage was dissolved in 1868, about one year before she died.
