Virginia was the only child of Edward Kenny and Lucy I. Ruffin Kenny. Her father was born in Dublin, Ireland and had trained in Edinburgh, Scotland for the ministry, but abandoned that profession to become a teacher. He immigrated to Virginia about 1823 and married Lucy Ruffin Hoskins, the young widow of Dr. John Hoskins of Virginia. Lucy and Edward Kenny moved to Hardeman County, Tennessee in 1830 and to Memphis in 1837, where he eventually became a cotton merchant. Even though her gravestone indicates that she was born in 1830, Tennessee Death Records reflect the birthdate as being 1832. Virginia married Julian T. Bedford in 1851, and they were parents to nine children. She died of pneumonia at the age of 84.
