World War II Resistance Figure. Older brother of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, He studied law at the University of Heidelberg, with further studies in Amsterdam, Berlin, and Geneva. He practiced law with the German airline Lufthansa, rising to the position of Chief Syndic in 1937, which position he held until his arrest for resistance activities in 1944. This position allowed him a considerable ability to travel, which later aided him in his resistance activities. In 1940, he began to systematically contact various resistance groups, among them the church groups through his brother Dietrich and the military groups through his brothers-in-law Justus Delbrück, Hans von Dohnányi, and Rüdiger Schleicher, in particular, the group led by Admiral Canaris. He was arrested for his part in the July 20th assassination attempt on Hitler on Oct 1, 1944 and was sentenced to death on February 2, 1945. The sentence was carried out in the night of April 22 to 23, 1945 by a death squad from the Reichssicherheitshauptamt at the fairgrounds near the Lehrter Prison.
