John was a sailor from Massachusetts, apparently on the ship "Jarvis". He was imprisoned in Richmond with Union POWs and Unionist civilians, and died there. He was initially buried on 9 December 1861 in a large plot with more than 500 POWs and at least a dozen Unionist civilians, just outside of Richmond's Shockoe Hill Cemetery. All of the remains were moved in 1866-67 to Richmond National Cemetery, where they rest today under "Unknown" markers.

A commemorative marker for the POWs, bearing his name as it was recorded in Cemetery records ("Joseph Albright"), is in Shockoe Hill Cemetery. See his cenotaph memorial: Joseph Albright.
