Robert, the son of John Alcorn and Margaret Carroll, married Mary Wade Hubler (his second cousin) in Hendersonville, Pennsylvania on 4 December 1851. They had at least five children, among them Ida, John Scott, Stewart Tacket, and Anna Mae.

He went West sometime after 1856 to join in the Gold Rush, returning to Iowa in November 1861. He owned an 80-acre farm just south of Riverside.

Alcorn mustered into Company "G", 22nd Iowa Infantry as a Corporal on 26 August 1862. He was promoted through the ranks to Company Second Sergeant in July 1864, before being mustered out on 25 July 1865.
