April 3, 1943 Edwardsville Intelligencer. C.A.R. Benedict Dies at his Home Descendant of Early family, was oldest male Native of Edwardsville. Charles Allen Reid Benedict, oldest known male native of Edwardsville and desendant od John T. Lusk, one of the first residents of this city, died Friday night at 7:15 o'clock at his home, 147 North Kansas street. Death was due to heart ailment with an attact which occurred Sunday. While Benedict's condition had been serious, he was able to leave his bed for several occasions Friday. Dr.Wayne B. Cox, master of Edwardsville Lodge no. 99, A.F. & A.M., spent nearly half an hour at the Benedict home a short time before death occurred. In that conversation Benedict expressed a belief that a nurse was not necessary and he would recover, Benedict is the oldest member of the local Masonic Lodge. John T Lusk settled in what was later to become Edwardsville about 1805. He was Benedict's great grandfather on the maternal side of the family. His father, Charkes L. Benedict, came here from the east about 1853. Benedict's parents were Charles L.. and Julia Lusk Benedict. He was born here on December 20, 1857, and had attained the age of 85 years 3 months and 13 days. He received his education here and at Gillespie, the family living in that city for about five years. Benedict completed the high school course here in 1873. Benedict became a landscape painter. calligrapher and draughtsman. he mapped, sketched and wrote for several publishing companies and rode horseback some 70,000 miles during 30 years in this work. Benedict made three 19-foot birdseye views of places in the west and two in Madison County. One of Edwardsville is in the Court House. The work was done in oil. Benedict was registered in six states for "loft work" in shipbuilding plants, but owing to his age at the time was never employed. In younger days he was employed as a school teacher in Madison County and later in Kansas. He wrote a marching song for the Edwardsville school and a number of other songs, but failedto have them published. Benedict was police magistrate here from 1929 to 1941. Miss Jessie Benedict, a sister with whom he lived for many years, died on February 23, Mrs Thos. Springer, another sister, made her home with him recently. The body is at the Lesley Marks Funeral Home on Kansas street. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'Clock from the funeral home. Rev. A.R. Ransom of St. John's Methodist Church, will officiate, Members of Edwardsville Lodge of Masons will participate in services. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
