Herman Herst Jr., known as "Pat" because his birthday fell on St. Patrick's Day, was the best know writer in the history of philately (stamp collecting)and the most published author in the hobby. According to the New York Times,"To suggest that Mr. Herst was a ubiquitous figure in philately would hardly due justice to a man who belonged to 81 stamp clubs, rarely missed a major exhibition and wrote 18 books and thousands of columns about stamp news. His contributions to philately were so widely recognized that he won every honor of consiquence in the U.S. and several in Britain where he became the only American ever elected to the board of the august Philatelic Traders Society. He grew up to be the stamp world's most revered dealer, auctioneer and collector and by far its most garrulous booster and most prolific authority."
Pat studied international law at Reed College and received a master's degree from the University of Oregon, returning to New York in 1932.
Over the years he ran a sucessful auction business 1940-1973, operated two private mail delivery services from his homes(first in Shrub Oak, NY and later in Boca Raton, FL). He wrote the philatelic classics "Nassau Stree:A Quarter Century of Stamp dealing", "Fun and Profit in Stamp Collecting" and "Stories To Collect stamps By".
He lived his last years in Boca Raton, FL where his beloved wife, Ida, cared for him during a prolonged battle against Parkinson's disease.
