Elias was born near Dayton, Ohio. He was the youngest of a family of four children. He received his education in country schools in Darke County. Raised on the family farm near Horatio, Elias continued farming throughout his life. He was 24 when he married Hepsida Fockler, who was four years his junior. They had two children: a son, George Calvin, who died at six months and a daughter, Anna, who married Emanuel Martin. At the time his father died in 1880, Elias's young family was living on the family farm with his aged parents. Elias continued to live on the family farm, caring for his mother, Christina, until her death in 1903. Upon his death in Adams Township, his remains were sealed in a crypt in the Versailles Mausoleum.
