NEWPORT NEWS - Edward William Anderson, 84, died on Monday, December 7, 2015. "Eddie", a charming, loving soul, who never knew a stranger, passed peacefully after a long and courageous fight against Alzheimer's Disease.

He was born on February 12, 1931, in Newport News to William Craig and Katherine Foretich Anderson. He attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, and was a graduate of the class of 1950. He attended Belmont Abbey College, and later William and Mary in Norfolk.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952, and served as a medic in the Korean War.

After the war, Eddie returned to Newport News where he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding, and later with the C&O Railroad for 31 years. He retired from CSX in 1991. In his retirement, Eddie enjoyed his passions full-time: spending time with his family, visiting friends, giving to others in need, traveling and vacationing in the Outer Banks, fishing, rooting for his beloved fighting Irish and playing the stock market.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5480 where he was a 4th degree Knight.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

He is survived by (Names of the living have been omitted per Find A Grave rules).

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home at 245 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 100 Harpersville Road, Newport News. The family would like to extend gratitude to all of the special caregivers who supported Eddie in the last years of his life.
