Sarah Sayre married John Brawley, 6 September 1836. Sarah was 82 years, 2 months, 23 days old when she died, according to the Death Index for Athens County, Ohio. The birth date for Sarah is calculated from the information from the death index. When John died the Spring of 1854, Sarah was left with the daunting task of farming and caring for her very young family. The surviving children were Patrick Leander, about 16, later married Margaret Hamble; Elizabeth, about 13, later married Wesley Tippie, and after being his widow for two years,Elizabeth married Dorcus Wheeler; John W., about 8, later married to Martha James; and William, four months, later married Dora White, then divorced. William raised his son. Dora married another soon after the divorce. Patrick volunteered to serve in the Civil War in Aug. of 1862. He served for 2 years and 10 months. He survived and lived to about 1895. I do not know where he and Margaret are buried; perhaps in Ross or Athens County. Sarah remained a widow until her death. Sarah likely received help from her nearby family through the years after John passed, although the fact that Sarah could not read had much to do with her children being the least materialistically successful of the recent descendants of Patrick and Margaret Catherine Brawley.
