From the Custer County Historical Society, found in the Simms family file, presumably an obituary from a local paper:

1918, April 23 "EDGAR NEWMAN BISHOP, was born March 19, 1853 at Port Crane in Broome Co., Pa. He died at his home at Gates of Heart trouble, aged 65 yr. 1 mo. 3 days. On Feb. 12, 1882 he married Hetter Simms of Galesburg, Illinois and 3 children were born. On Nov. 29, 1907 he married Anna Cullen of Crisfield, Maryland who with the 3 children by the former marriage survive, Mrs. Lawrence Pike of Bellingham Wash., John C. D. Bishop of Gates, Mrs. H. S. Worth of Adena, Coloro [sic], and one grand-daughter Virginia Grace Pike; 3 bro. and 1 sister, Virgil Bishop of Montery Virginia (Virgil B. Bishop); John C. Bishop of Greensboro, Va., Marvin L. Bishop of Casper, Wyoming and Ellen V. Taylor of Shenadoa [sic], Va. Custer County thus has lost another pioneer citizen who came here in the spring of 1880 from Shenandoah, Va. and located Gates and has been resident there ever since. Fun. was by Rev. Steel with an address by Rev. George P. Tirtes of Broken Bow. The maile quartet sang. A large attendance. (See Picture of Mr. Bishop in Newspaper May 2, 1918). He died 1 a.m. Tuesday morning at his home one mile north of Gates. He was still holding his hammer in his hand when found. He was 56 yrs. old and came here with his cousin J. N. Peale from Send, Va. in spring 1880. He was an early day surveyor of Custer County and he had much to do with the early settlement. Two years ago he was candidate for State Representative on the Republican ticket."

NB: In the Gates family file at the Custer County Historical Society, the biography of Stillman Gates (founder of Gates NE) noted that Stillman Gates settled next to Ed Bishop, who went to Illinois to find himself a wife, returning with his wife, Hetta Simms.
