Douglas M. Bowers, 83, of Peoria passed away at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

He was born April 13, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Clarence W. and Mary Pearl (Nichols) Bowers. He married Mary Ellen Staker on April 12, 1952. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Judy (Ron) Fowler and Kaethe Janis, both of Peoria; one son, Jeff (Barb) Bowers of Murrieta, Calif.; four grandchildren, Matt (Jessica) Fowler and Robert A. (Stefanie) Janis, both of Peoria, and Bernard and Ashley Bowers of Murrieta, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes (Sonny) Tyson of Lawton, Okla.; one brother, Jim (Judy) Bowers of New Berlin, Wis.; and one sister-in-law, Evelyn M. Clubb of Peoria.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Douglas graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1945 and from Bradley University with a BS in 1954 and an MS in 1968 in Industrial Arts.

He joined the Marines at age 17, just before the end of WWII, and was sent to guard the coal trains in China.

He spent his career working in industry at Allied Mills and teaching Industrial Arts at Limestone School in the '50s and '60s. He was one of the original faculty when Illinois Central College opened in 1967, retiring from there in 1987.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home, with visitation two hours prior to services. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
