Anna May "Babe" Ahern, Owner and Operator of Evergreen Country Club over five decades, passed away Dec. 12, 2010, after a brief illness.
She was 103.
Beloved daughter of the late Anna and Owen Ahern; fond sister of the late Arthur, Owen, Walter, Frank and Margaret Field; aunt of the late Buddy, Robert Field and Margaret Fennell; grandaunt of many nieces and nephews.
Babe was known as the first Lady of Golf and she admits to Golf being her life.
Anna May "Babe" Ahern lived her entire life on the green acres of the Evergreen Country Club in Evergreen Park. She inherited it from her mother, who had turned it from a farm into a golf course in the 1920s. She once said she knew every blade of grass by its first name. She died in December, a few weeks after selling it to a developer.
For much of the 20th century, Ahern was a legend, good and bad, in her patch of the South Side. She was famous most recently for fighting the village of Evergreen Park's attempt to take over her land.
What any of us leaves behind is a measure of who we were. Babe Ahern was clearly one of a kind.
