SLATON, Oct. 13 - Dr. S.H. Adams, pioneer Slaton physician, was shot fatally in his office here at 4:10 o'clock this afternoon, and A.L. Tudor, coal and grain dealer, gave a .380 automatic pistol to Police Chief Tom Abel.

"I killed Doctor Adams," Tudor told Abel.

Tudor, who said the shooting was an aftermath of an accident in which his son, Wood Tudor, was mortally injured Aug. 25 near Slaton, was taken to Lubbock late today. Charges will be filed Friday morning at Lubbock, District Attorney Durwood H. Bradley said.

Doctor Adams, 58, died of "shock and hemorrahages" at Mercy hospital at 7:55 o'clock.

The pioneer physician, a resident of Slaton 21 years, and formerly of Lubbock, was wounded four times; and none of the wounds was said to have been sufficiently grave to cause death alone.

One bullet took effect in the left elbow, another in the right wrist, one in the region of the groin, and one grazed the skin of the right lower abdomen. None of the slugs, said to have been fired from a .380 caliber pistol, entered the abdominal region.

Wood Tudor, who was survived by his widow and three young children, died on an operating table in Doctor Adams' office following an automobile accident about two and one-half miles north of here August 25. Haskell Cooper, 24, has been indicted for driving an automobile while intoxicated in connection with the accident.

The elder Tudor, 52, said tonight that his son died while under influence of an anesthetic.

Tudor said he began firing the automatic after the doctor allegedly had made a move to a drawer in the desk near which he was seated.

Attending physicians, both from Lubbock and Slaton, at first said chances for Doctor Adams' recovery were good. Shock and excessive bleeding from the bullet wounds caused death, they said.

There were no eyewitnesses to the shooting. It could not be ascertained definitely whether the slain man made any statement. He was in a semi-conscious state for some time prior to death.

F.J. Helber, a farmer, living on the Adams' farm; J.E. Stokes, Joe Williams, a negro janitor of a barber shop; and S.I. Fluke, a barber, were some of the first men into the office after the shots were fired.

County Attorney Vaughn E. Wilson, who was in the justice of the peace's office in the same block, arrived at the scene before Doctor Adams was taken to the hospital.

The county attorney said he found four .380 caliber shells and two bullets. One of the slugs was laying on the floor and another was lodged between two daybooks, in which accounts were kept, on the table. The bullet had penetrated one of the books and had stopped against the second. A bent gold-plated cuff button was found also.

Physicians said all bullets went through Doctor Adams' body without lodging.

District Attorney Bradley, Sheriff Wade Hardy, and Deputy Sheriff Bill Earnest came to Slaton from Lubbock soon after the tragedy and made an investigation.

No weapon was reported to have been found in the office, Mr. Bradley said.

No serious fractures were caused by the woulds. So grave was the physicians' condition that no operations were performed. Stimulants were given to him min a futile effort to save his life.

Dr. J.T. Krieger and Dr. J.H. Stiles of Lubbock sanitarium were called soon after the shooting.

Doctor Adams moved to Lubbock about 23 years ago and began the practice of medicine - the beginning of a long career of successful practice. Twenty-one years ago he moved to Slaton, and for years had been official Santa Fe railway physician.

Besides the widow, Doctor Adams is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Achilles Corcanges of Fort Worth, and Miss Josephine Adams of Slaton. Mrs. Corcanges tonight was said to be enroute to Slaton.

Mrs. Fred Denham of Lubbock is a sister of the physician. Mrs. J. Farris Frye is a sister and W.B. Price of Lubbock a brother, of Mrs. Adams. Doctor Adams also is surviv3ed by three sisters of near Crosbyton.

Funeral arrangements to be directed by Foster funeral home, had not been made tonight. Burial probably will be in a Slaton cemetery.

The pioneer physician had been active both in church and civic work. He had been a member of the Methodist church since he came here and for years had been a steward in the church. He also had been a member of the public school board. He was a native of Georgia.
