Russell House was my good friend and chess partner from our first meeting in 2005 until his death in 2010. He was a staunch Catholic who served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and subsequently worked as a laborer in Illinois before he retired. He was a very honest, intelligent man with a wry sense of humor. He had a heart of gold, but hated double standards and refused to suffer fools in silence. Besides playing chess, his hobbies included playing checkers, listening to country and classical music, painting, fishing, gardening, and helping his daughter Ida care for her horses. He frequently decried the corruption that has long tainted professional and college-level sports, but he loved watching Little League and AAA baseball games. He was also a published poet whose favorite reading material included ghost stories and Mark Twain's writing.
