DANVILLE — Dorothy Gertrude Apple, 93, a longtime resident of Belleville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at River Valley Medical Center in Dardanelle.

She was born Feb. 1, 1916, the fifth of seven children to Walter Winston and Virginia Comer Richeson in Clarksville, Mo. Her father was a Methodist minister who pastored in a number of churches in New Mexico and West Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Grady Apple; her parents; brothers, Arthur Kilpatrick, Herschel Sealing, Ralph Winston and Walter Wilson; and sister, Lelia Virginia.

Dorothy excelled in her studies, she graduated from West Texas Teachers College in 1935. She also acquired a business college degree and a master's degree. She had a lifelong thirst for doing for others — teaching was her passion. She was recognized as an outstanding secondary educator in America in 1974. Her teaching career spanned 26 years at Belleville, Havana, Fourche Valley and Casa in Yell and Perry counties. Hobbies include gardening, playing the piano for fun and church, and sewing. She won the adult sewing sweepstakes at the Yell County Fair in 1978. She was a long time member of Belleville United Methodist Church where she played the piano.

She met and married Grady Johnie Apple when he was traveling to Houston, Texas, on April 25, 1942. They lived on a farm south of Belleville until July 2003.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Jenny (Virginia Ann) Sharrer of Houston; sons, Tim Apple and wife, Carol, of Belleville and Winston Apple and wife, Liz, of Madison, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Ruth W. Metts of Garland, Texas; grandchildren, Kyle Apple of Harpers Ferry, W. Va., Livia Marsh of Herndon, Va., Lisa Dunn of Little Rock, Leslie Spears of Belleville, Christel McCurry of Ruther AGlen, Va., and Ryan Sharrer of Houston, Texas; six great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Wilson Free Will Baptist Church, southwest of Belleville with Bro. Jeff Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Russell Cemetery at Belleville. Arrangements are by Cornwell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers include Dalel Knight, Kenny Loyd, Pledger Ball, Delvin Williams, Tommy Apple and Daniel Apple.
