ALVIS, Catherine Mae, 78, formerly of Tampa, went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 7, 2008. A native of Layland, W.V., Mrs. Alvis was the daughter of the late Domingo and Mabel Sanchez. She was preceded in death by her husband, James David Alvis of Princeton, W.V.; daughter, Scarlett Smith of Charleston, S.C.; and three brothers, Harlen, Buddy and Billy Sanchez. A licensed practical nurse, she retired as an operating room technician at Bluefield Community Hospital. Her treasures in life were her many friends, trips to Hawaii, swimming, gardening, bird watching and spending time with her cats. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Open Door Baptist Church, Tampa. A private ceremony will take place at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.V., at a later date. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Darlene Patterson of Pennsylvania, Deborah D. Alvis of North Carolina, Susan B. Alvis of North Carolina; son, James Steven Alvis of Florida; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnny and Ray Sanchez; sisters, Josephine Coulter, Theresa Owing and Dorothy Gamez. God saw you were getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you, and whispered, "come with me." With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. Funeral arrangements entrusted to O' Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.
