NEWTON - Harold E. Alvis, 90, of Newton died at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday (May 18, 2005) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buchanan Funeral Home, 307 W. Jourdan St., Newton. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Alvis was born Aug. 22, 1914, in West Liberty, a son of Royal Lester and Lola Edith Daniel Alvis. He married Betty Jean Furrow on Aug. 22, 1940. She died Feb. 5, 1970. He later married Nora Wakefield on Nov. 20, 1971. She died Aug. 8, 2003.

Survivors include a son, Edward Alvis of Champaign; a stepson, Eldon Wakefield of Newton; two grandsons; a great-grandson; nine stepgrandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Alvis was retired from AMF, where he was a tool and die setter. He was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of the Jasper Post 20 American Legion and the Newton VFW.

Memorials may be made to the Jasper County Senior Citizens.
