Gertrude Newell Aldrich was born the daughter of lumber magnate Octavius Samuel Newell (1837-1900) and Mary Olivia Jones (1843-1927); they were residents of Kenosha, Wisconsin and Lake Forest, Illinois. Octavius Newell was educated at Yale, and served during the Civil War as a clerk for General Grant's quartermaster. Returning from the war, he joined his father's lumber company, Newell Beaumont & Company. He and Mary had five children.
On June 5, 1890, Gertrude married Frederick C. Aldrich in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This union produced two daughters: Anita (1893-1959) who married Lawrence Dunlap Smith and Helen (1895-1987) who married Albert Blake Dick. The Aldrich's resided at 725 N. Sheridan Road in Lake Forest, Illinois.
