He was the son of the late Dewey F. and Maude Hunsucker Adkins. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church and was retired from Horne Motors.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Tweed Adkins of Orangeburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Adkins Gibson and Freddie of Orangeburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald Franklin Adkins and Gloria of Orangeburg; three grandchildren, Angela Gibson Judy and Randall, Bryan Frederick Gibson, all of Orangeburg, Jason Adkins of England; one great-grandson; two brothers, Jack L. Adkins and Bobby L. Adkins, both of Spartanburg; two sisters, Margaret Adkins Eply and Mary Adkins Gibson, both of Spartanburg.
